Non-Human Primate Breeding >  Policy

Objective

Progenix Research recognises and is fully cognisant that, as part of the intended breeding programme, we have responsibility of stewardship for the animals in our care. We also wish to ensure that the animals used are treated humanely, afforded the highest level of animal care and are used in an ethical manner.

Policy Statement

In accordance with the above the following policy statement is made:

1.

Only animals sourced, trapped and screened in accordance with our Primate Procurement protocol will be used as breed stock for the facility.

2.

Animals will be housed in breeding troupes and have access to cage areas that exceed those guidelines as set down by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) / Universities Federation of Animal Welfare (UFAW) (United Kingdom) working party.

3.

The breeding and nesting areas replicate, as far as possible, conditions found in the animals' natural habitat and are furnished to allow for the normal expression of behavioural activity, whilst providing a bio-secure area.

4.

Animals are given access to potable water ad-libitum, a high protein pelleted diet and fruit and vegetable supplements.

5.

Animals are regularly checked for health and clinical well-being and given appropriate prophylactics/treatment as required.

6.

Only animals that are certified as fit to travel and with negative screen results, as laid out in the Primate Procurement protocol, are considered for use for scientific purposes. The release certificate is certified by a suitably qualified Veterinary Surgeon.
