The beagle dog is the primary non-rodent species used for regulatory pre-clinical toxicity testing of pharmaceuticals and certain chemicals (agrochemicals and biocides). The Progenix Research facility includes a state-of-the-art dog unit, purpose built to provide the highest standards of animal care and advanced study procedures. A total of 15 separate animal rooms each designed to hold up to 40 dogs, enabling housing of one study per room. Each room has its own separate preparation and treatment area for avoidance of cross contamination. Pen design provides an enriched environment with sleeping and exercise areas, raised platforms and flexible partitions so that group or pair housing can be employed as study design dictates. The dog unit includes a devoted necropsy suite and areas for surgical procedures. Study capability includes: safety pharmacology, single and repeated dose toxicity, dose range-finding studies and toxicokinetics. All major routes of exposure can be accommodated: oral, intravenous, subcutaneous, intramuscular, dermal and inhalation. Progenix staff have considerable experience in continuous infusion administration. |
