Animal Welfare > Animal Welfare Policy
Progenix Research is absolutely committed to the ethical use of animals in research only when there is no suitable non-animal alternative. All work will be conducted in accordance with the principles known as the 3 Rs - Reduction, Refinement and Replacement - so that the minimum possible number of animals is used to achieve the objectives of a study; study procedures are refined to avoid unnecessary suffering; non-animal alternative methods are used wherever they available and acceptable for the scientific/regulatory purpose of the study.
The Progenix Research animal facilities are located in Malaysia and are therefore not subject to the stringent animal welfare regulations that exist in certain other countries, notably the UK. Nevertheless, our animal facilities and welfare practices will be equivalent to, if not better than, those found in the best UK laboratories. An internal ethical review process will scrutinise the animal work conducted at Progenix Research. This ethical review focuses on ensuring compliance with the 3 Rs principles and includes a formal cost/benefit assessment where appropriate. Work will not be accepted in circumstances where client requirements cannot be reconciled with the Progenix Research ethical standards. In this way Progenix Research will create an ethically driven research environment in which animal welfare is given top-priority but avoiding unnecessary delays often encountered in international CRO’s.
